Call Down the Hawk Summary

The book opens with Declan calling a mysterious somebody and telling them he wants 'the key'. He does not speak of this call to anyone, not even his brothers.

Dreamer hunters, a group backed by the government who kill dreamers (which they call Zeds) to 'stop the end of the world', kill two dreamers in Ireland. One of them was one of the hunter's brother. Then they burn down the house and everything around it.

The Lynch brothers are on a road trip so Ronan can visit Adam at college. Also so he can look at apartments because he wants to move to be closer to Adam.

Ronan dreams along the way, and another dreamer speaks to him. This dreamer is a man named Bryde.

In Washington, DC, Jordan Hennessy (or rather, Jordan, and not Hennessy) is attending a party where she displays her ability to copy anyone's handwriting. She and the real Hennessy are art forgers. She also wants an invite to the Fairy Market, an underground black market that deals in prestigious illegal goods and services. She is denied an invite.

Ronan meets Adam at Harvard. Adam takes him to meet his friends, and they play a card game together. Ronan discovers that Adam has been lying to his new friends about his home life and stuff, but Adam defends it, saying he can have a fresh start, why would he want to be That Kid still.

Carmen Farooq-Lane, one of the dreamer hunters (and the one whose brother was killed), is recruited for more jobs, given a Visionary (people who receive visions of dreamers to find them), and sent to Washington, DC.

Ronan sleeps and dreams in Adam's dorm room. Bryde is in his dream again, talking about 'playing a game' aka unraveling the plot. Ronan intends to bring back just a motorcycle for Adam, but brings back some murder crabs and a hoverboard, too. Ronan and Adam (mostly Ronan) sort of wreck Adam's dorm room killing all of the crabs. This causes problems for Adam.

Myrtle, the man who's handwriting Jordan had forged at the party, breaks into Hennessy's house (where Jordan also lives...and a lot of other girls, because Hennessy is a dreamer and they're all her dreams) to steal from her. The tables are turned on the would-be thieves, and Hennessy takes Myrtle's Fairy Market invitation.

At Harvard, Declan helped Adam with the crabs, taking the dead bodies away. Adam told people that Ronan got drunk and trashed the room, because he can't tell anyone the truth, obviously. Ronan is heartbroken over the incident; he really wanted to move closer to Adam, but now he sees he can't. He offers to pay for the damages to the dorm.

Back at the Barns, Ronan is more or less depressed. Declan lectures him about needing a routine. Ronan moves a cow to the long barn so he can work on trying to wake them up.

Declan calls Ronan to meet him and Matthew to talk about Matthew's strange behavior. Aka sitting on the roof of the school to 'look at the river', which you can't see from the school. Ronan asks Declan about the Fairy Market, which Bryde mentioned in one of his dreams.

Hennessy talks to Jordan about the Fairy Market plan, aka they're in it to steal a painting.

Farooq-Lane and her Visionary, Parsifal Bauer, also discuss attending the Fairy Market.

Declan takes Ronan to the Fairy Market. Jordan is also attending the Market. Everyone is talking about Bryde at the market, mentioning him without naming names. Ronan and Declan find a painting of a woman who strongly resembles their mother.

Farooq-Lane attends the Market as well, but gets outed as part of the 'law' and is chased out.

The painting of their mother, The Dark Lady, is one of Niall's dreamt works, and supposedly makes whoever owns it dream of the ocean. Declan buys it. Ronan gives his name for it.

At the Market, Jordan is making herself visible by painting a copy of an artwork while a lot of people watch, so that Hennessy can steal the painting they're after. Declan talks to her and gives her his number before leaving. The painting Jordan and Hennessy were after was also bought by Declan (The Dark Lady). Jordan puts two and two together with a description of the buyer and realizes it's Declan.

Declan and Ronan encounter a woman who looks strongly like their mother. Ronan chases after her but loses her. He receives a card from some women who talked to the woman.

Ronan dreams of Adam. Bryde speaks to him again. The game continues, aka figuring out the mystery of the woman who looks like Aurora. Ronan texts Gansey a picture of the card and asks him if he knows anything. Gansey replies that it's the logo for Boudicca, an all woman group focused on the protection and organization of women in business.

Parsifal has a vision.

Ronan returns to the site of the Fairy Market, but the hotel is in ruins, having burned down. There, he spots The Woman Who Looks Like Aurora and a man who looks a lot like himself. He gives chase. The nightwash overwhelms him.

Farooq-Lane and Parsifal arrive at the site of the Fairy Market as well, following his vision. They give chase after Ronan.

Ronan wakes from dreaming in his car, holding the broken hilt of a sword, thanks to Bryde. His car has also been moved out of the road and tucked away out of sight somewhere, meaning someone saved him from being found by the dreamer hunters.

Hennessy and the girls plot how to get The Dark Lady from Declan.

A mysterious woman, Liliana, hitches a ride with strangers in attempts to get to Washington, DC. Something awful happens in the car, killing the driver and the driver of the car behind them.

Back at the Barns, Ronan calls Adam and tells him all about what happened, about Bryde, how Bryde saved his life. Adam doesn't tell Ronan not to chase after Bryde and the others, but to go slow. Ronan becomes convinced that the man he saw who looked like him was his father, instead.

Jordan meets Declan at a museum for a not-date, an excuse to get him out of his house while the other girls steal The Dark Lady and swap it out with a copy.

Farooq-Lane and Parsifal find an old dreamer running a small little shop. Parsifal doesn't want to report her because he knows she'll be killed, dangerous or not, but Farooq-Lane insists.

Declan cuts open the back of the swapped Dark Lady and discovers nothing there. Of course, because it's been swapped but he doesn't know that.

Adam visits the Barns to surprise Ronan the day before his birthday. Ronan is appropriately surprised and pulls a gun on him, not trusting his eyes after the people who look like his parents. It is indeed just Adam.

Adam wants to find Bryde, and decides to scry to do it. Instead, he finds something terrifying that is afraid of Bryde. Adam stops breathing and Ronan is forced to hurt him to bring him back.

At Washington, DC, Liliana looks for a place to stay without people so she won't hurt anyone. She does not succeed.

Adam is reluctant to leave the Barns after his time there is up, because he has class in the morning that he can't miss. He promises to see Ronan again when break comes around.

Jordan fantasizes about living on her own and goes to an apartment viewing. Hennessy finds out when the property manager calls.

Hennessy is suffering from the nightwash. She and Jordan talk a little about Declan. They fall asleep together with the Dark Lady, hoping it will work and change Hennessy's dream.

Ronan dreams and talks to Bryde. Bryde sends him on the path of saving Hennessy, who is dying.

Jordan wakes up in the bathroom where she fell asleep with Hennessy to find the entire room flooded. Hennessy has dreamt another copy of herself. Ronan arrives in time to break down the bathroom door and let the water start to drain. The new copy dies. Jordan and Hennessy are all right.

Ronan reveals that he's a dreamer and that he knows Hennessy is, too. He meets the other copies and tells them that Bryde told him where to find them. Jordan asks how good of a dreamer Ronan is.

Declan receives a call from Matthew's school telling him that he's left school grounds again and that the school counselor would like to talk to him. Declan attempts to contact Ronan to get Matthew, but receives no answer.

Ronan dreams and brings back with him a copy of the Dark Lady except with Hennessy's face and tattoos.

Parsifal throws a fit over his clothes and laundry detergent. He's still upset about Farooq-Lane calling in the elderly dreamer. He gets out of the car and leaves.

The copies tell Ronan about Hennessy's story. That she will dream thirteen copies and then she will die. They introduce all of the girls.

Ronan goes to talk to Hennessy. They talk about dreamers, he discovers that Hennessy's dreams really are killing her, because she's bleeding. Hennessy says she's not going to tell her girls about the dream that's killing her (and that it's the dream and not the copies).

Declan goes to Great Falls to find Matthew. Chainsaw is also there, as are some of Ronan's other dream creations. Matthew puts the pieces together and figures out that he's a dream thing, that he must be one of Ronan's.

Ronan meets his brothers for his birthday. Things do not go well. Declan is very upset, Matthew is upset. Matthew calls Ronan a liar.

Hennessy takes Jordan to get another tattoo to match hers (since she gains a tattoo whenever she dreams a copy). They fight about not letting Ronan try to help Hennessy with her dream problem. Jordan refuses to get the tattoo and leaves Hennessy there.

Farooq-Lane attempts to find where Parsifal went.

Liliana ends up accidentally killing more people.

Jordan goes to see Declan and brings him the real Dark Lady. They agree not to talk about why Jordan and the others stole the painting from him in the first place. Jordan takes him to a place she frequents to paint, and starts to paint him. Declan receives a call. Jordan scrapes her painting and says he'll just have to come back for another sitting.

Liliana is locked in an old freezer by the one person who lives at the house she stayed at who wasn't accidentally killed by her.

Ronan dreams and talks to Bryde again. Ronan tells him about Matthew hating him. Then he wakes up to his phone ringing.

Ten years before, Hennessy's mother shot herself. Her mother was also a dreamer.

Hennessy calls Ronan and they meet at a cafe. She talks about her dreams, that she's had the same one ever time since her mother died. Ronan shows her the scars he got from the night horrors that almost killed him once. Hennessy reveals she dreams about a thing called the Lace, a horrifying, powerful presence that wants out of her dreams and promises to kill her. Ronan reveals that this sounds like the same thing Adam saw when he was scrying. Ronan offers to help her.

Farooq-Lane eventually finds Parsifal. He's had another vision, and he's in a really bad way, half aged. He's dying, but held on to show Farooq-Lane his vision.

Declan talks with Matthew about him being upset. He considers himself the fake brother now. Declan has him get the real painting of The Dark Lady out and cut open the back, where a card is tucked into it. He reveals that his mother isn't really Aurora, that the painting isn't of Aurora, but his real mother; Mór Ó Corra.

Farooq-Lane goes to the place where Parsifal's last vision led her and finds Liliana. Liliana is a visionary, and it's been her visions accidentally killing the people around her.

Declan and Jordan meet up and go to see Boudicca. Declan is looking for his birth mother. At the designated meeting place, they meet the new Fenian, who looks remarkably like Niall and Ronan. The new Fenian attempts to warn them away, telling them they don't want anything to do with Boudicca, and he also kind of loves Declan like a son?

Ronan takes Hennessy to Lindenmere, his new dream forest, to help her with her dreams. He also tells Adam where he's going in case something happens. He gets Opal to help them, since she can help focus dreams.

Liliana and Farooq-Lane discuss dreamers and what the Moderators do (the dream hunters). Farooq-Lane is called in to confirm that the elderly dreamer, now dead, was indeed a dreamer. She punches Ramsey.

In Lindenmere, Ronan continues to try and help Hennessy with her dreams. Instead of dreaming of the Lace, she dreams of the day her mother shot herself, over and over. Bryde talks to them. Eventually, Hennessy actually dreams of the Lace.

Declan brings Jordan to his home. They talk about how impersonal his home is, until he finally brings her up to the attic. The attic is where he keeps everything that's really him, paintings and things he's genuinely interested in. He figures out that Jordan is a dream when she starts acting weird in the same way Matthew did. He offers to take her home.

Liliana has another vision and ends up accidentally killing some cows.

Declan takes Jordan home. There, she discovers the other girls have been murdered/are in the process of being murdered still by the dreamer hunters. Declan helps her fight them off and escape. They also find out the hunters know about Ronan.

Ronan drives the Lace back with light and orders Lindenmere to take it away. He offers to dream with Hennessy, to help protect her from the Lace. Then Declan calls him and tells him that people are headed to Declan's to kill Ronan, and that Matthew is supposed to be there.

Lindenmere helps Ronan out, and creates a pack of things called sundogs. Ronan orders them to save Matthew.

By the time Ronan and Hennessy arrive at Declan's, the place has already been trashed by the dreamer hunters, but Matthew and Declan are both all right, hiding in the attic from the sundogs. Ronan subdues the sundogs and locks them up in a water bottle.

Lock talks to Liliana about the work they do and offers her some freedom in between work, ie keeping her as a 'rental'. Liliana requests that Farooq-Lane stay with her.

At the same cafe they'd met in before, Ronan, Hennessy, Jordan, Declan, and Matthew regroup. Ronan receives a call from Blue, who's spoken to Mr Gray, who told them that the dreamer hunters are a group with government backing, and that there's a lot of them.

Hennessy and Ronan agree to try dreaming together so they can get Bryde's help. Declan, Jordan, and Matthew will go to the Barns where it's safer.

Ronan and Hennessy go to Great Falls to dream. In the dream, both Ronan and Hennessy have swords they use to hold the Lace at bay. Magic swords that release light when they're swung. Hennessy's sword is From Chaos and Ronan's is Vexed to Nightmare.

Unfortunately, while they were dreaming, the dreamer hunters found them. But Bryde steps in and stalls for time while Hennessy and Ronan regain themselves after the dream. Farooq-Lane tries to work out a compromise. The other hunters do not agree with it.

Ronan and Hennessy use their swords to blind the dream hunters, Bryde swoops in, and they ride off into the night on a hoverboard (like the one Ronan dreamed back at Harvard).
